What’s the Best Way to Edit an Animated GIF in Photoshop – Photoshop edit animated GIF
GIFs are fun things to watch and the memes on Facebook becomes funnier when they are GIFs instead of simple images. So, it is not a matter of surprise to know how to edit GIFs in Photoshop. There are certain ways you can edit GIFs with or without Photoshop. But I am here to show you which is the fastest and best way to edit or make a GIF. Check out the article below to find out yourself.
What Is an Animated GIF?
GIF stands for graphics interchange format. Generally, a number of images are gathered into a single file to make an animated gif. If you look carefully at a GIF file, you will see that there are multiple images coming one by one to make it look like a video.
However, GIFs don’t contain sound. They are usually quite small but they are not actually videos. A GIF is basically a bunch of images or frames that are kept in a single file.
Making or Editing a GIF Using Images – Photoshop edit animated GIF
You can use multiple images to make or edit animated GIF. To do so here are the steps that you need to follow.
Uploading the images
First of all, you need to upload your images to Photoshop. You can drag an image directly on the Photoshop window. You can also choose the select image option from Photoshop to upload an image on the Photoshop window.
Opening the Timeline Window
In Photoshop, you will find a timeline window. You have to open the timeline window in order to move on with the process of making an animated GIF. In this window, you can add multiple images for making or editing a GIF.
Creating Frame Animation
Now that you have opened the timeline window, you will find various options in that window. You need to find out the “Create Frame Animation” part in this window. Once you found it click there.
Making New Layers
Now in this window, you have to make new layers for every new frame you have. This way you will be able to see the images alternating and you will see that it’s almost looking like a video.
Making Frames from Layers
Next thing you have to do is to make frames from your newly created layer. To do so, you have to click on the same icon of the menu. You will find it on the right side.
Selecting Time Duration
Under each of the frames you created, you will find there is an option for selecting how long a frame will appear. Choose the time according to your requirement. If you choose a longer duration your GIF will be slower. But a shorter duration will make the GIF faster.
You can also select how many times you can make the GIF restart. This is called looping the GIF. You can select the number of loops right beside the time duration, under the frames.
Previewing the GIF
You are basically done with the process. Now before exiting and exporting the GIF, you should preview the GIF to see if it is running the way you wanted. If you want you can still the loop numbers or time duration while previewing.
Saving & Exporting
Finally, you have to save your project. After saving the project, you have to export it to a particular drive. You can run the GIF from that location and enjoy your own created GIF.
Making or Editing a GIF Using a Video
It is not necessary that you only use images in a series to make a GIF. You can also convert a video into a GIF as well. Usually, we find some funny cuts in a large video.
These cuts can be easily converted into GIF using Photoshop. It is not quite different from making or editing a GIF using images. However, there are some slight differences.
So, here are the steps that you need to follow to make or Photoshop edit animated GIF using a video file instead of images.
Step 1: Importing the Video
The first step for you would be to import a video in the Photoshop window. You can click on the file option above the window. There you will see the ‘Import’ button. Hover over the button and there will an option called ‘Video Frames to Layers’. Click on that option.
A pop-up window will appear and you have to select the video file that you want to edit.
Step 2: Adjusting Video Length
Here you have to choose the starting and ending point of the gif. In other words, your video may be of 10 mins but you need only 10 secs, so you have to select which 10 seconds of the video you want. You can easily set the starting and the ending point once the pop-up window appears.
Step 3: Adjusting the Time of Frames
It is actually similar to adjusting the time of a GIF created by images. Once you have uploaded the video file, you will see that it turned into a lot of small parts and each part is in a different frame.
You can choose the time duration of each frame. Set the duration as per you like and save it.
Step 4: Set Loop Number
This is also similar to the previous method of Photoshop edit animated GIF. You can choose once twice and even forever if you want as the loop number. If you choose forever the GIF will go on and on until you manually turn it off.
Step 5: Saving & Exporting
Again just like the previous method you have to save the file and then export the GIF to a particular drive. Of course before doing that you should preview the GIF to see if everything is right or not.
So, “Photoshop edit animated GIF” these were the two ways you can make or edit Photoshop animated GIF easily. These methods are very simple and there cannot be any simpler method. I find them the best and easiest way to make or edit a GIF and hopefully, you will too.
